The chalk holders are sturdy, and hold even really small nubs of chalk tightly in place. Although it's obviously easier (and faster) to simply grab whatever piece of chalk is resting at the board, I find that whatever I write using the chalk holder usually ends up being more legible -- which is, of course, the point. They really grip the chalk very firmly - other chalk holders that I have used in the past do not grip the chalk very firmly at all, with the result that the chalk was inevitably pressed back into the chalk holder the moment I started writing on the blackboard. Good tool to not get your fingers dirty with chalk, looks good and professional. You still have to use your fingers to pull some chalk out, but overall your hands are not as dirty from chalk compared to not using this. ...more

The others were either too thick (plastic) or the chalk would slide in when writing on the board. This one holds the chalk well - the clip prevents it from rolling on desk - nice touch. The free, clear case is wonderful - keeps my bag clean. Yes, you have to unscrew the bottom when sliding out more chalk but that takes less than 2 seconds. I do it while talking to the class. This was a Christmas present for my daughter, she had been asking for a Hannah Montana lamp for YEARS because she wanted to get rid of her "baby" Nemo lamp (that was actually bought for her as a present when she was a baby, so she was right). I looked at stores all over and couldn't find anything even close to a Hannah Montana lamp, even at the Disney store, which is weird because they have every other product you could ever imagine on the face of the earth with her face stamped on it. I don't remember if the dimensions are listed for it but it is larger than I thought it would be. I only gave it 4 stars because the fuse in it blew after only 1 week.
